Preventive dentistry in North Raleigh
Personal prevention for a healthier smile
Preventive care helps protect teeth and gums, recognize changes early, and make everyday oral health easier to manage. At Scanlan Family Dentistry, recommendations reflect your age, history, current health, and individual risk.
Schedule Preventive Care
Prevention That Changes with You
Preventive dentistry is more than a recurring cleaning. It combines conversation, examination, professional care, and practical guidance so that small changes can be noticed and addressed before they become more difficult.
There is no single schedule or set of treatments that fits every patient. Your care may change with cavity risk, gum health, medications, existing dental work, growth, pregnancy, dry mouth, home-care habits, or other health considerations.

How often should I have a dental exam and cleaning?
The right interval depends on your oral health, risk factors, and treatment history. Dr. Scanlan will recommend a schedule based on your individual needs rather than assuming the same timing is right for everyone. Read more about how often to see the dentist and the factors that can change your recall schedule.
Will I need X-rays at every visit?
No. Dental images are recommended when they are expected to provide information that cannot be gathered through the clinical exam alone. Your age, history, symptoms, previous images, and current findings all help determine when new X-rays are useful.
Are fluoride treatments only for children?
No. Children and adults may benefit from topical fluoride when cavity risk is elevated, enamel needs added support, or dry mouth and other factors make decay more likely.
What is the difference between a routine cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A routine cleaning supports preventive care for generally healthy gums. A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, treats gum disease below the gumline when clinical findings show that it is needed.
Can you help if I feel anxious about preventive visits?
Yes. Please tell us what makes dental care difficult for you. We can explain each step, pause for questions, and work at a pace that helps you feel informed and respected. Our guide to feeling scared of the dentist explains how to start the conversation before your visit.
Do children receive the same preventive care as adults?
The goals are similar, but the visit is adapted to the child's age, development, comfort, and current teeth. Recommendations for X-rays, fluoride, sealants, and cleanings are made individually.
Why should I schedule preventive visits if nothing hurts?
Some dental problems develop before discomfort begins. Regular visits help us notice changes and discuss appropriate next steps. Read why preventive visits without pain still matter.
Do I still need to floss if I brush well?
Yes. Brushing cannot fully clean between teeth. Daily interdental cleaning helps remove plaque in those spaces. Our flossing guide explains techniques, tool choices, and common mistakes.
